Gritting update
Posted 9 Jan 2026, 12:53 p.m.
Following a very busy night, it appears that most areas have now seen the worst of the snowfall that was forecast. Our gritters have been working continuously to keep sites as clear of snow and ice as possible, although conditions have been challenging.
We had hoped that milder temperatures today would help thaw much of the remaining snow. Unfortunately, temperatures have stayed lower than expected, meaning there is still a significant amount of snow, ice, and slush on the ground. As temperatures are forecast to drop sharply this evening — potentially as low as -7°C in some areas — we expect these conditions to freeze solid. This may result in very hazardous surfaces, including a high risk of thick black ice.
We urge everyone to take extra care over the next 24 hours, particularly when travelling or walking outdoors.
Our gritters will continue working throughout today and tonight, spreading as much salt as possible to reduce the impact of the freezing temperatures. However, with it being the weekend and with reduced traffic levels, salt may take longer to activate, especially where conditions remain damp.
Please travel safely.
