New addition to Houlton: Multiuse Games Area designed by Houlton School students planned for Houlton

A new Multiuse Games Area (MUGA) is planned for Houlton, set to arrive in 2027, and it’s been shaped by the people who will use it most.

Last year, students from Houlton School came together with the Houlton Urban&Civic Team and Jupiter Play to reimagine what a Multiuse Games Area can be.

The consultation put the design in the hands of Houlton’s teenagers. Through a series of workshops, students explored ideas, shared what works (and what doesn’t), and designed their own concepts. Representatives from each form brought their peers’ views together, creating a collaborative vision for a more inclusive and engaging space. Every stage of the process was recorded, helping shape a design that reflects a wide range of interests and needs.

We couldn't be more excited about what we’ve come up with as a collective, as shown in the images. It features:

TORO Interactive Ace Arena
Toro is a multi-use sports goal designed for quick, inclusive play. It supports a range of games inspired by popular team sports, with different modes that make it easy for people of all ages and abilities to take part.

K-Roc Climber
K-Roc offers a climbing experience that works for a wide range of users. It creates an opportunity to be active while also providing a place to spend time and connect with others.

Robinia Park Furniture – Hangout Bench
The Hangout Robinia bench provides informal seating that encourages people to gather and spend time together. Its natural design helps it sit comfortably within landscaped spaces.

Basketball Stand
This setup includes three hoops on a single post, each adjustable to different heights. It allows people of varying ages and abilities to play at the same time.

Street Workout Zone
A simple, accessible space for bodyweight exercise. With pull-up bars, dip bars and varied heights, it supports a range of movements and abilities, from beginners to more experienced users.

Robinia Hammock Seats
These hammock-style seats offer a relaxed place to sit, gently move, and socialise. They add a different kind of seating that encourages both play and rest.

Fono Interactive DJ Booth
The Fono provides a shared music space where anyone can connect their phone and create a fun atmosphere.

The new MUGA is planned for a location opposite Houlton’s Play Park.

The plans are now being submitted to the Rugby Borough Council planning portal, where they will be publicly available to view. Our wider community will be able to comment, share feedback, and help shape the final outcome. We will update this post with the link once it is available.

We’ll be sharing updates as the project progresses, so keep an eye out here for the planning link and don’t miss the chance to have your say.
